La Paz—short for Nuestra Señora Reina de La Paz (Our Lady Queen of Peace)—is more than just a place. It’s where the farm worker movement took root and flourished. Nestled in the Tehachapi Mountains of Keene, California, this 187-acre property became a haven of hope, strategy, and spiritual renewal for Cesar Chavez and countless others who dedicated their lives to justice. Today, La Paz is home to the Cesar Chavez Foundation and the United Farm Workers headquarters, as well as the Cesar E. Chavez National Monument, established by President Obama in 2012. It remains a sacred site—where history lives, and the mission endures.
