$100,000 awarded to 20 students from Arizona and California from PepsiCo Cesar Chavez Foundation Latino Scholarship Fund

Scholarship recipients embody academic success and honor legacy of civil rights leader Cesar Chavez

(Fresno, Calif.) September 28, 2017 – Twenty Latino students from Arizona and California have each been awarded $5,000 scholarships for the 2017-18 academic year from the PepsiCo Cesar Chavez Latino Scholarship Fund. Administered through a partnership between the Cesar Chavez Foundation and PepsiCo, over the next five years a total of $300,000 will be awarded to qualified Latino students in Arizona and California in an effort to promote their academic success. Already in its sixth year, the scholarship has given more than $500,000 to over 60 students.

“These students exemplify Cesar Chavez’s legacy of self-sacrifice, community service and championing equality and respect for everyone,” said Angelica Cazares, Cesar Chavez Foundation’s Director of Education Fund. “These life-changing funds provide students a chance for a better tomorrow. With this opportunity, many of them will be the first in their families to graduate from college.”

“At PepsiCo, we are deeply committed to supporting the communities where we operate and improving the lives of those who call them home, said Paul Boykas, PepsiCo’s Vice President of Public Policy and Government Affairs. “This scholarship fund enables us to invest in the next generation of young leaders who can be beacons of change and fulfill their promise that no matter the circumstance, they can succeed.”

A committee of 15 community leaders, educators and Cesar Chavez Foundation representatives selected the awardees from more than 400 applicants. The scholars were chosen based on academic excellence, leadership in extra-curricular activities, commitment to volunteer service and financial need. Scholarship recipients must compete 30 hours of community service with the Cesar Chavez Foundation as well as their own chosen organizations.
